Costs (Expenses)

Applicants to any LL.M. program should calculate expected costs carefully. Some programs have high tuition and fees and the high expenses of living in a big city. Eugene, Oregon, is a small city and the University of Oregon is a state institution. Therefore costs generally are lower. The Oregon LL.M. staff are committed to work with its students to help find comfortable housing at a reasonable cost.

Total tuition and fees for the LL.M. program for 2009-2010 for non-residents will be 28,880, with in-state tuition somewhat lower.

Living expenses in Eugene are less than in practically all other cities with LL.M. programs. Bus travel is free for all students, housing costs are relatively modest, and there is no sales tax or V.A.T. on anything. LL.M. students should anticipate spending about $10,000 for living expenses, $1,000 for books, and $2,500 for personal expenses during 9 months. Any travel costs are additional. Health insurance is mandatory for international students and for 2009-2010 is $1,047. Insurance is also strongly recommended for US students; the rates are higher. Students must have their own laptop computers as well. The Law School has negotiated special rates for laptops.

U.S. government-backed financial aid loans are available for U.S. citizens and permanent residents. but unfortunately not for international students.

International applicants must submit the University of Oregon International Student Financial Statement, which is available online via our website. See http://admissions.uoregon.edu/apply/pdf/ifinancial.pdf In addition, international applicants must submit copies of financial documents (bank statements, scholarship award letters, etc.) to show that they have sufficient funding for one academic year. This is a USCIS immigration requirement. If they do not have sufficient private funds, they should look for governmental or private foundation funding well in advance, before any decision on admission is made.

Fellowships/Scholarships for the Oregon LL.M.

• American Association of University Women: Fellowships for female, non-US citizens — all countries. (deadline Dec. 1 for study beginning 20 months later)
• Amideast: Fellowships for citizens of Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Syria, Tunisia, UAE, West Bank / Gaza, and Yemen.
• Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior): Scholarships for citizens of Brazil.
• Cyprus Fulbright Commission: Fellowships for Cypriots (deadline July 31 for study beginning 13 months later)
• Edmund S. Muskie/Freedom Support Act: Fellowships for citizens of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, or Uzbekistan (administered by IREX).
• Ford Foundation: Fellowships for citizens of Brazil, Chile, China, Egypt, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Mozambique, Nigeria, Palestine, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, and Vietnam.
• Halco Mining Guinea Scholarship Program: Scholarships for citizens of Guinea.
• Fulbright Program: Fellowships for citizens of over 100 countries are eligible to apply. Contact the Fulbright office in your country.
• IIE: Institute of International Education: Information regarding many fellowship and scholarship opportunities for citizens of all countries. Applicants should contact the IIE office closest to them to receive the latest information on funding opportunities.
• Kosovo American Education Fund (KAEF) Graduate Fellowship Program: Fellowships for habitual residents of Kosovo who meet the requirements to study at the Master's level in the US. (deadline September, for study beginning 11 months later)
• The Leo S. Rowe Pan American Fund: Interest-free loans up to $15,000 for citizens of Latin American and Caribbean countries (Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, Bahamas, Belize, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominica Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, St. Kitts and Nevis, Peru, Panama, Paraguay, Saint Lucia, Suriname, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, and Venezuela).

• The Rotary Foundation: Scholarships (depending on local Rotary office) for citizens of most countries (except for a few countries) (deadlines are in January-June for study more than one year later).
• US Dept. of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs: Assists foreign applicants to U.S. institutions with a wide-range of information pertaining to studying in the USA, including some U.S. government administered programs. All countries containing a US embassy.
• US Dept of State Regional Education Advising Coordinators: Provide leadership and expertise in educational advising issues to educational information centers, U.S. embassies, and foreign applicants. Works with citizens from all countries.
